Serious competition for OneNote

If you feel like “what the heck is OneNote…”, Here is a head start. OneNote is a cool note taking software which comes along with Microsoft Office system. OneNote is mainly targeted for professional, students and Information Workers who need to take lots of notes and manage it and communicate it efficiently. You can find more about OneNote here.

Most important feature of OneNote is it’s Instantaneous note saving capabilities. You dont have to worry about saving it explicitly. Copy/Paste or just type whatever you want, that is enough for OneNote to remember it forever. You can share your notes with other peers too. OneNote also supports Rich Editing features and some special note taking behaviors (bulleting etc).

Now let’s look at the new competitor for OneNote.

I found this cool & nifty tool called EverNote last week in a late night surf. I found it very interesting at first sight, not just becoz if comes for FREE, but it almost mimics the look & feel of OneNote in some aspects.

Currently OneNote 2003 full version is priced at around 99$. Ofcourse 99$ is very small amount to pay for that cool Note taking software. But what about students, people who can’t  afford 99$ for a note taking software. I feel programs like EverNote should be a very good choice for such cases.

EverNote Full Mode View

As you can see, EverNote comes with a categories pane, with some special categories pre-defined for you where you can store clips and notes from various applications. The main pane has support for multiple types of note in a single view.

You can add templates to the Notes, so that a pre-defined structure will be presented to you to just fill-in the information.

If you add few types of notes, typically EverNote looks as shown below..

I am not sure if EverNote can serve you in all aspects just like OneNote, but this tool for sure is a good companion for poor man 🙂

Why you should kick "Adobe PDF Reader" Out !

Everyone knows the importance of a PDF reader in day to day life and thanks to adobe for such a cool product.

Then why the hell, I am asking you to kick out the PDF reader itself ? Well, we have one more cool product for us to read PDF documents instead of Adobe PDF reader.

I have been using Foxit Reader since it’s version 1.2 and I was very much impressed with the ease and performance of the little tool. The reasons I got to remove Adobe’s PDF reader are as follows…

01. Size

When I re-build my laptop anytime, I used to search for Adobe PDF reader software in my CDs, just because I could not wait 15~20 mins of time to download the heavy download of Adobe Reader using my low-bandwidth internet connection out here.

Now Adobe PDF Reader 7.0 comes up in a ~20 MB sized download. Give a break ! Why should I download a whoping 20 MB files just to read a PDF file…?

On the contrary side, Foxit Reader comes in an amazing 1.5 MB (almost fits a floppy) sized download.

02. Installation

Adobe Reader has a good installer which creates many registry entries. Foxit Reader does not need an Installer. It works as a stand alone reader. All it does probably is to register itself as a PDF Opener program on your OS.

03. PerformanceMany times, people get frustated by the time Adobe PDF reader takes to load when they open any PDF from browser. That is very annoying and irritating. Foxit wins over Adobe here too…Super fast and Instantaneous.

04. Annoying

I hate Adobe PDF reader’s Update manager. When I am eager to open some important documentation, Adobe update manager starts checking for updates and prompts for updating the client.

So what are you waiting for now? Just kick out your Adobe PDF reader and go get the cool Foxit PDF Reader.

Be a lion at home

I got this from one of the fun mailer threads, though it sounds very funny, it reflects the actual situation that most of the Indian developers are facing in US on H1-B visas.

In a poor zoo of India, a lion was frustrated as he was offered not more than 1 kg meat a day.

The lion thought its prayers were answered when one US Zoo Manager visited the zoo and requested the zoo management to shift the lion to the US Zoo.

The lion was so happy and started thinking of a central A/c environment, a goat or two every day and a US Green Card also. On its first day after arrival, the lion was offered a big bag, sealed very nicely for breakfast.

The lion opened it quickly but was shocked to see that it contained few bananas. Then the lion thought that may be they cared too much for him as they were worried about his stomach as he had recently shifted from India.

The next day the same thing happened. On the third day again the same food bag of bananas was delivered.

The lion was so furious, it stopped the delivery boy and blasted at him,
‘Don’t you know I am the lion…king of the Jungle…, what’s wrong with your management?, what nonsense is this?, why are you delivering bananas to me?’

The delivery boy politely said, ‘Sir, I know you are the king of the jungle but .. did you know that you have been brought here on a monkey’s visa!!!

Moral of Story : Better to be a Lion in India than a Monkey elsewhere!!!!!

Freedom from Internet Explorer "Find" dialog

The most annoying feature in Internet explorer is the find feature. I hated IE for not making the find feature better since long time. The stupid find dialog of Internet Explorer shows you a classic popup where you need to input your keyword and hit enter, enter, enter until you find the word.

Firefox has made this “find” feature more usability driven and it works as “find as you type”. That was so cool.

Now IE7’s DOM model allows you to have control over HTML and text. Using this feature, IE7 team has published a small script which does a “Search inline” here. One of the 3rd party plugin which works the same way can be seen here…

Go grab this cool externsion to IE Here

play with any website’s images..very cool

I got this cool javascript in a fun mailer. Open any website with lots of images are hosted. (preferably small images).

Once the website is loaded, simple copy and paste this script in to browser’s address bar and hit “ENTER”

Bingo ! Enjoy ! 🙂

Windows Live Writer and extended life…

Everyone loves plugins, and I am no different at all. I love most of the plugins when they come for free of cost and make my life more cooler. As of now I am eagerly hunting for few plugins for 2 different applications. Windows Live Writer is one of the most wanted.

Today I found a great source for WLW plugins. wlwplugins.com lists out all available plugins for WLW with proper description and instructions to use them. A cool web site for a cool little app 🙂

So far my favourite plugins are…

01. Windows Live Writer from System Tray
02. Insert Image from Flickr
03. Insert Multiple tags
